What is Career Start?

Career Start is a Queensland Government program managed by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET) — one of the Government's key programs for building a skilled workforce aligned to industry demand.

Enter the Workforce

Support people new to the pest management industry to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Upskill & Advance

Help existing workers move into higher-skilled roles or expand their service capabilities.

Job-Ready Training

Industry-relevant, practical training that delivers real workplace outcomes from day one.

⚠ Important Funding Rule — Read Before Planning

  • Government funding under Career Start is limited per person — it is not unlimited across a career
  • Qualifications already completed, and any training currently underway, can reduce or remove eligibility for further funded training

Critical: Prior study affects what a person can access next. Before committing a staff member to a traineeship, speak to ProTrain — we'll confirm their funding eligibility first.

Who is this Program For?

Career Start supports pest management employers and the people they employ.

Employers

  • Train new staff entering the industry
  • Upskill existing technicians to qualified level
  • Build a more capable, compliant workforce

Existing Employees

  • Turn on-the-job experience into a formal qualification
  • Move into higher-skilled or supervisory roles
  • Expand into new service areas (e.g. timber pests, commercial work)

New Hires

  • Start a career in pest management with an employer
  • Earn while you train, with government-supported costs
  • No prior experience required
