What is Career Start?

Career Start is a Queensland Government program managed by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET) — one of the Government's key programs for building a skilled workforce aligned to industry demand.

Enter the Workforce

Support people new to the pest management industry to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Upskill & Advance

Help existing workers move into higher-skilled roles or expand their service capabilities.

Job-Ready Training

Industry-relevant, practical training that delivers real workplace outcomes from day one.

⚠ Important Funding Rule — Read Before Planning

  • You can access one general qualification + one traineeship, OR two traineeships
  • You cannot complete two general pathway qualifications

Critical: If a traineeship is completed first, you may lose eligibility for a general pathway qualification. This matters when planning training pathways for staff — speak to ProTrain before committing.

Smart Workforce Strategy

At ProTrain, we help businesses structure training to maximise funding and reduce administration.

Our Recommended Approach

A mix of both pathways is often the optimal strategy for pest management businesses

New Hires

General Pathway for fast entry — minimal admin, flexible, government subsidy applied immediately.

Core Team

Traineeship for structured long-term development — formalised outcomes and employer involvement.

Experienced Staff

Targeted upskilling via additional units or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathways.

Maximises funding access Reduces admin burden Accelerates workforce capability

ProTrain Insight

Many pest businesses assume "we should always put staff on traineeships" — but in reality the General Pathway is often faster, simpler, and involves far less administration. Choosing the right pathway also affects funding eligibility, costs, and training timeframes. We'll help you get it right.
