Important Career Start Funding Rule

Under Career Start you can access one general qualification + one traineeship, or two traineeships. You cannot access two general pathway qualifications. If a traineeship is completed first, you may lose general pathway eligibility.

  • Under 17, not at school, and has not completed Year 12
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • Holds (or is the partner of someone who holds) a Health Care Card, Veteran Card, or Pensioner Concession Card

Hardship exemptions may also apply. Contact ProTrain to confirm your eligibility.

Within 14 days of commencement50% refund of total employer & student contribution = $1,787.50 (standard) | $1,275 (PPG)
After 14 days but before 3 months15% refund = $536.25 (standard) | $382.50 (PPG)
After 3 months of commencementNo refund applicable

General Pathway — No employer required. No training contract. Fastest and simplest path to qualification. Best for new entrants, self-employed operators, and existing workers not in a formal traineeship.

Traineeship — Requires employment and a formal training contract. Employer provides workplace supervision. Best for businesses wanting structured, long-term workforce development aligned to industry outcomes.

If units are granted Credit Transfer (CT), those units do not attract government funding. This reduces the total subsidy available. The figures above assume no credit transfers. Speak to ProTrain to model the cost if CT units are likely.

ProTrain Insight — General vs Traineeship

Many pest businesses assume they should always put staff on a traineeship. In reality, the General Pathway is often faster, simpler, and lower-admin. The best strategy is usually a mix: new hires on General Pathway for fast entry, core team on Traineeships for structured development. Talk to us — we'll help you get it right.
